Welcome
Ms. Sonja Harvey
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? ........... It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fears, our presence automatically liberates others.”
-Marianne Williamson
We are all gifted with talents, and it is written that if we don't use our talents, then we lose them. As a facilitator of learning, my charge is not only to assist students with identifying their talents, but ensuring that they utilize those talents to their maximum potential to help make the world a better place.
As a product of St. Louis Public Schools, I know the value of a solid educational foundation. However, I learned many of my greatest lessons outside of the classroom and I was blessed to have had many wise people to cross my path. Each person touched my life in a very special way, while I was on my journey of discovering my own talent(s). Many of these adults were not in the classroom, they were neighbors, mail people, policemen, doctors, store clerks and even beauticians to name a few. These adults were prime examples of the quote, "It takes a Village to Raise a Child." They rerouted my path, gave words of advice, encouraged me and communicated with my parents, to ensure that I realized and then maximized my talents. They taught me that we all (community members, family and educators) must be vested in the success of our students and that a students' education does not begin or end at the school house door.
I attended and graduated from Soldan High School in St. Louis. After graduation, I attended Wilberforce University a HBCU located in Wilberforce, Ohio where I majored in Elementary Education and Science (minor). I returned to St. Louis and obtained my teacher's certification in Elementary Education from Harris Stowe State University in 1997. Later, I received my Master of Education in Educational Administration from the University of Missouri, St. Louis in 2001.
I have been working with children academically for last 20 years. I have held the roles of teacher assistant, teacher, assistant principal, building principal, adjunct instructor (college) and district facilitator. While holding all of the various roles in education my person motto remained the same, " Keeping children and their education first, by addressing the needs of the whole child.".
